Banned Books Week 2026

Banned Books Week is October 4-10, 2026, and the MGCC Library is committed to protecting the freedom to read.

According to Book Ban Data provided by the American Library Association (ALA), the ALA's Office for Intellectual Freedom (OIF) found that 4,235 unique titles were challenged in the U.S. in 2025. This is the second-highest number of challenged titles tracked by the ALA, with 2023's numbers taking the lead at 4,240. Feel free to take a closer look at the statistics, as well as join the campaign to unite against book bans.

Also feel free to stop by the library anytime this week to browse our Banned Books Week display, located near the student computers. This display features several books that have been banned or challenged in the United States, for a variety of reasons. Featured books include I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings by Maya Angelou, The Da Vinci Code by Dan Brown, and Mockingjay by Suzanne Collins.

In addition, you can search our online catalog or take a look at Libby, if there are any banned or challenged books you're interested in reading. If you don't see the book you're looking for, interlibrary loan is available for all MGCC students, faculty, and staff. This allows the MGCC Library to borrow books from other libraries on your behalf. Please don't hesitate to ask a library staff member for assistance with searching the catalog, accessing Libby, or requesting a book through interlibrary loan. We're more than happy to help!
